A BIT ABOUT AXEL

Axel (he/him) was born and raised in Barcelona (Spain) and has lived most of his adult life in Hong Kong. He currently lives in beautiful Mill Valley, California, surrounded by magnificent redwood forests with lovely hiking trails that he wishes he’d visit more often.

When he is not writing or drawing big-eyed characters, Axel spends his time watching squirrels and unsuccessfully chasing raccoons away from his vegetable garden.

Questions & Answers

Does Axel speak any Spanish?

You bet! Even though he writes in English, Spanish (and Catalan) are Axel’s mother tongues.

Did Axel study writing or visual arts?

Not really! As a kid, Axel always loved creating stories and drawing silly cartoons, but he never imagined that becoming a professional writer was even an option. As a result, he studied business, got an MBA, and created and managed several start-ups. But then, one fateful day… everything changed.

What does Axel enjoy reading?

Axel loves reading fiction. All sorts of fiction. All the time. Action, adventure, science-fiction, fantasy, mystery, historical…. Picture books, chapter books, middle grade, young adult, adult…. There are too many great books out there and too little time to read them all!

Does he have any middle-grade favorites? That’s a tough question because some of Axel’s favorite series are written for middle-grade. If he had to choose one, though, he would probably choose Harry Potter because that was the first series that he read in English, opening an entire new world of books to him.

What about favorite kidlit authors? Some of his favorite authors are Roald Dahl, Neil Gaiman, J.K. Rowling, Philip Pullman, Julia Donaldson, Dr. Seuss… As a kid he enjoyed books in Spanish by authors such as Elvira Lindo and Juan Muñoz Martín.
